Philippine Science High School – Cagayan Valley Campus scholars, Arianne May Bacolod and Edrian Paul Liao bagged spots for the semi-finals of the Philippine Biology Olympiad (PBO), competing against the nation’s top 55 participants for a place in the PBO finals.
Liao and Bacolod ranked 28 and 35, respectively, out of 200 participants nationwide during the PBO elimination round held last December 19, 2020 which qualified them to the semis.
“I was surprised when I learned about the results and thought I just got lucky, but that pushed me to review even harder for the semi-finals,” Bacolod remarked.
“They really exerted effort in reviewing, especially that the two students didn’t come from Biology Sci Op classes,” Joel Magday, one of the coaches of the scholars said, during an interview on February 19.
In the semi-finals, the contestants took the two 20-point online tests under 70 minutes, consisting of various types from true or false to essays, all about Biology.
“Reaching the semis is already an achievement, since they competed among the best in the Philippines, what is important is their takeaways from the contest, ” said Magday.
“For future PBO takers, remember that knowledge can’t be efficiently gained through cram reviews. I suggest you study early and watch crash course videos online, little by little, building up your understanding ,” Bacolod concluded in the interview.
